Sure to make her eyes light up, this elegant 33mm watch has a shimmering silver-toned guilloche dial, beneath which ticks Zenith’s Elite 692 movement providing a 50-hour power reserve. Omega Constellation
Spoil your beloved with an Omega Constellation – a watch that became recognisable for its distinctive ‘griffes’ (the claws that hold the sapphire crystal in place) when they first appeared on the Constellation Manhattan in 1982. Omega revived the line in 2009 – introducing its iconic design to a new generation of women with an appreciation of fine watchmaking. This pretty bi-colour model channels this year’s renewed appetite for retro yellow gold. Other timeless design features include its white mother-of-pearl dial marked with diamond-set indexes, elegant Roman numerals and the distinctive Constellation star at six o’clock. Inside ticks Omega’s calibre 1376, a precision quartz movement.

Surprise your man
IWC Portugieser Chronograph
Though this year IWC is turning its gaze to its ladies’ watch collection with the new Da Vinci [link to SIHH round-up blog], the brand remains hugely popular among our male customers (after all, its strapline is ‘engineered for men’). Take the famously oversized Portugieser, one of the brand’s most enduring families. The first models in the line originated in the 1930s, when two Portuguese businessmen requested wristwatches with the extreme precision of marine chronometers, with a chronograph scale calibrated to the accuracy of a quarter of a second. At the time, IWC’s only solution was to use a highly-accurate hunter pocket watch chronometer, and create an ‘oversized’ watch case to accommodate it.
The Portuguese – as it became known – was an instant success and in 1993, IWC updated the line under the name Portugieser. This steel chronograph model inherits the watch’s instantly recognisable large 40.9mm round case and purist silver-coloured dial. It also houses a mechanical chronograph movement with a 44-hour power reserve and a stopwatch function – making this watch an everyday classic perfect for those fond of style combined with tradition.

Hublot Big Bang Steel Ceramic 44mm
If he has bolder tastes, consider Hublot. The Swiss brand has made a name for itself in the luxury watch industry with its flamboyant designs and unapologetic rainbow of colours – namely its iconic Big Bang first launched in 2005. The brainchild of Jean-Claude Biver, the collection champions the art of fusion: that is, combining unlikely materials such as steel and gold.
This Big Bang mixes stainless steel with hardwearing zirconium oxide ceramic, which can be produced in a handful of different colours. Here it’s an understated polished black on the bezel, which sits on a chunky 44mm satin-finished steel case. The dial has a stamped carbon effect and a pop of colour in its white luminescent and red chronograph hand. Throw in its black rubber strap, and this is one watch sure to impress.

TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph
Designed for the high-octane world of Formula 1, this striking quartz model has a sporting aesthetic – visible in its practical stainless steel case and racetrack-inspired tachymeter scale to calculate speed. Blue-dial timepieces have become commonplace on male wrists in recent years – and this blue model has added appeal thanks to its distinctive orange seconds hand and white luminescent markers, providing maximum legibility no matter the conditions. Best of all, a screw-down crown keeps this watch water-resistant to 200m.
