Jacob & Co Epic X Chrono Tourbillon MPN: EC400.22.AF.AA.ABRUA
£23,500.00
Description
When launching the new Epic X collection in 2016, Jacob & Co. ventured into a new direction, with new shapes, new material and a new frame of mind. The inspiration of the design came from the letter X, which symbolizes something unknown, mysterious and appealing, reflecting the energy of the brand at the time.
Epic X Chrono Tourbillon is the high complication evolution of the original concept. It retains the major design features of Epic X: its assertive 47-mm case, its unique lug shape and the way it develops through the dial thanks to a set of X-shaped bridges. The case is engineered to shield every protruding part. The crown, the pushers and the countdown crown are all inserted in pieces that extend from the case's round shape. This ruggedness is further enhanced by the case's water resistance to 200 meters.
Epic X Chrono Tourbillon requires a movement that brings all the energy of Epic X Chrono and takes it up one notch. Caliber JCAA09 is a self-winding chronograph with two registers, a configuration called bi-compax. The classic movement architecture, with horizontal clutch, column wheel and two pushers, is interpreted in a sporty fashion. It is enhanced by a one-minute flying tourbillon located at 6 o'clock. The openworked carriage retains one of Jacob & Co.'s most distinctive designs. Functional, finely finished and highly exclusive, Caliber JCAA09 is all a chronograph can be and everything a tourbillon allows, bearing the signature design elements of Jacob & Co. and of the Epic X collection.
Along with its chronograph function, Epic X Chrono Tourbillon comes with a rare feature. Its inner ring is not fixed. It rotates on demand thanks to a second crown at 10 o'clock, allowing the wearer to create time marks or a countdown process that adds to the piece's natural complexity.
The pusher at 2 o'clock starts and stops the timing function. Elapsed time is shown with the central seconds hand and the 30-minute register at 3 o'clock on the dial. Once the timing sequence is over, the 4 o'clock pusher resets all the hands, preparing Epic X Chrono Tourbillon for the next measurement. The crown at 10 o'clock drives the inner ring, allowing the 60-minute timer to operate independently from the chronograph when read with the central minute hand. It can also become a 60-second timer when read with the red chronograph hand and can be used as a countdown in both cases.
Gravity naturally has a negative impact on a movement's accuracy. By putting its escapement into a constant spin, the tourbillon counteracts this natural defect. As the tourbillon carriage in Caliber JCAA09 is held only by its base, it has no upper bridge, making it a flying tourbillon. Epic X Chrono Tourbillon can be either a highly sports-oriented chronograph, a summer-themed one, or purely luxurious. Versatility lies at the core of a great sports chronograph, and Epic X Chrono Tourbillon adds a high complication touch to increase that effect.
