A year with Patek Philippe, with Head of Watch Buying Mark Toulson

Mark Toulson is the Watches of Switzerland Group’s Head of Watch Buying and holds decades of experience in the wonderful world of watches. Here at Calibre, we’re thrilled that Mark has shared his expert view on both the beautiful and complicated timepieces from Patek Philippe with us.
Patek Philippe's new launches have been numerous this year, which is always good news for us at the Watches of Switzerland Group and even better news for those customers who are hankering after something truly special.
Take the brand's new Minute Repeaters, for example, which really express the mastery and exquisite craftsmanship that we expect from Patek Philippe. Just think about Big Ben chiming the hours at the Houses of Parliament, then think about miniaturising that clock down to the size of a pocket or wristwatch and achieving that same function ... it's quite something!
In contrast, but no less spectacular, is the Aquanaut Luce. It was launched in 2005, and I think the brand showed incredible foresight back then to produce a ladies' sports watch with the added glamour of diamonds. It's a terrific collection, and hugely sought after by our clients.
GRAND COMPLICATIONS 6002R
Comprised of 705 parts and featuring a tourbillon, minute repeater with 'cathedral' gongs and perpetual calendar. You'd think that would be enough complications, but the 6002R goes further, displaying sidereal time and the phase and orbit of the moon. It's very special indeed.
GRAND COMPLICATIONS 7040/250G
This perpetual calendar has a blue Grand Feu enamel dial, and the case is adorned with I 68 diamonds. Truly an amazing piece - the pinnacle of watchmaking for ladies.
AQUANAUT LUCE 5267
The Aquanaut was introduced in 1997 as a slightly more casual sports watch aimed at a younger client. With the Luce \(meaning light in Italian\) came the addition of diamonds to the bezel and new colourways. The watch seen here is also available in black and white.
AQUANAUT LUCE 5269
The gents' Aquanaut has long had a 'travel time' feature, so it's great to see it added to the Luce collection. This, plus the I 8-carat rose-gold case, white dial and tropical strap, give it a real vacation vibe. Probably the ultimate 'holiday watch' for women!
