Introducing the Seiko 5 Sports X Brian May Red Special II Limited Edition

The Watches of Switzerland Group 2 minute read

Renowned for its world-leading expertise in watchmaking, Seiko’s story began in 1881 as a watch and clock repair shop in Ginza, Tokyo. After more than 140 years of innovation, Seiko remains a front-runner in the world of horology, combining precise timekeeping with beautifully Japanese craftsmanship. After creating the first-ever quartz watch in 1969, Seiko have a stream of world firsts, including launching the first-ever TV watch and becoming the first analogue quartz watch with a chronograph function.

With a realm of iconic designs, the Seiko 5 Sports has delivered consistently high levels of reliability, durability, value and performance. Gaining almost 60 years of watchmaking expertise, this much-loved collection has been launched for the second time, collaborating with one of the world’s most gifted musicians, Brian May.

Following on from a successful collaboration with Brian May in 2020, Seiko is proud to launch a new limited-edition timepiece with the acclaimed guitarist, with just 12,500 models available worldwide. For more than 40 years, Brian has worn a Seiko diver’s watch, brought while first on tour in Japan in the 1970s. Relying upon his legendary ‘Red Special’ guitar along with his Seiko, Brian brought the pair along whilst touring the globe – making great music and keeping great time.

The timepiece itself takes inspiration from Brian’s ‘Red Special’ guitar, hand-made by himself and his father using only hand tools. The dial recreates the instrument’s fine details, with a pressed pattern reminiscent of the texture of the wood and its nylon strap decorated with vertical stripes, designed to resemble guitar strings. Its case is a special gold-colour version, requested by Brian himself, inspired by the newly released 'Gold Series' reissues of his solo albums.

The timepiece is offered as a limited edition watch with Brian’s signature on the case back. Delivered on a presentation box reminiscent of a guitar case, clients are also gifted with a replica of a ‘lucky sixpence’ coin, which Brian uses instead of a plectrum.

Proceeds from the sale of the watch will be donated to The Mercury Phoenix Trust, founded by Brian May, Roger Taylor and their manager Jim Beach in memory of rock band Queen’s iconic lead singer, Freddie Mercury.

The Seiko 5 Sports Brian May Limited edition watch is a truly exceptional tribute to the ‘Red Special’ guitar that served Brian May on stage and in the studio to create the sound that made Queen one of the most celebrated brands in history. Lauren Virk
