Sustainability isn’t a fad. It’s not a trend we’ll wash over in six months’ time, and it’s so much more than swapping to cardboard straws and turning the big light off when you leave the room. ‘Becoming green’ is a responsibility we all carry, in 2022, and a way of life we must all embrace. The watch industry is, absolutely, included in this effort.

Watches and sustainability have a complex relationship. To their merit, luxury timepieces are inherently friendly to the planet: these treasures are passed through generations, looked after with the upmost respect, and are hailed for their longevity.

But when it comes to materials – both within the timepieces and in the packaging they are presented in – the industry has historically fallen short. The big names in the game have had to step up; and step up they have indeed.

Sustainability is high on the agenda for us all. So, if you’re looking for your latest timepiece to look good on your wrist and do good for our earth, the following watches might just take your interest.

Cartier Tank Must SolarBeat

The Cartier Tank is one of the most iconic watches of all time. Produced for over 100 years now, the collection has seen a plethora of new additions, new takes, and new ways to keep the timepiece fresh. One of the most important twists came in 2021, as Cartier revealed the Tank SolarBeat.

At the heart of this Tank – one that looks almost identical to the Tank Louis Cartier – is a quartz movement that is powered by light. It’s secret and point of difference comes if you inspect the numerals on the dial, where only a slight change is noticeable. Underneath these roman numerals is a photovoltaic cell, and Cartier claims it can run for 16 years before the rechargeable battery needs to be replaced.
